Help Portrait – give the gift of happiness

Help Portrait – a movement started by photographer Jeremy Cowart went live all over the world today. It’s a very unique approach to giving something special this holiday season. Help-Portrait brings together photographers from all over the world and encourages them to take photos of those less privileged, to get them printed and deliver them as gifts to those photographed. Think how wonderful it is to be able to give someone the chance of being photographed and saving/sharing a precious memory – someone who otherwise would have never thought that they could get their picture taken. Help portrait is a movement that binds people together through photography. Currently, there are 654 Help-Portrait groups worldwide where photographers have gone out and made a difference today. It’s a brilliant idea that makes the whole holiday spirit of giving so much more worthwhile.

What’s most interesting about this movement is that it gives photographers the opportunity to make the holidays special for someone else. It is not about you, it is about them. The idea is to give – to spread happiness through a photograph. We all know that photography is a strong medium that helps us capture some beautiful moments and memories. Today, photographers through Help Portrait are giving unprivileged families the chance to cherish these memories.  Help Portrait has put together a list of questions and answers for everyone who is interested in finding out more.

The site encourages photographers to get together with other photographers and/or go to people who need these photographs and make someone’s day special. People worldwide are posting their Help-portrait stories on twitter.  Help-portrait is currently the most talked about topic on Twitter and they have about 5100+ followers on their twitter page. The Help Portrait team defines who all needs pictures. They state:

‘Who needs pictures? Anyone who wouldn’t normally have access to or be able to afford professional photography. We suggest the following groups of people for starters…

  • the homeless
  • orphans
  • single moms (and their kids)
  • single dads (and their kids)
  • sick children
  • sick parents
  • the elderly
  • army vets
  • underprivileged families
  • your neighbors?’

Help-Portrait is a simple and powerful idea that shows the difference we can make in someone elses life just by capturing a beautiful moment.  ‘It is about helping people see the beauty of who they are’, it is about letting people dream and believe in this idea. It is an opportunity to network live and then share it on the social media. Jeremy Cowart describes it as, ‘ a movement, a shift in thinking about photography.’
